On Tuesday of this week, the Friends of Nutsford Vale were able to arrange for their campaign to be discussed at the Children & Young People Scrutiny Committee Meeting. Item 6 on the agenda, “New / Central East Secondary School” and this can be viewed via the council’s webcast service.

The webcast provides lots of background information about how the site was chosen for a Secondary School Development and the challenges facing the council to resolve the issue of contamination on the site. Major concerns are the levels of Asbestos, Benzo(a)pyrene, Naphthalene, Ammoniacal Nitrogen, Hydrocarbons, Cyanide, Mercury, Carbon Dioxide and Methane which may be disturbed if the development goes ahead. Whilst the site remains capped and untouched it is safe.
So far the the Council are unable to report how these items on the site will be mitigated down to acceptably safe levels for a Secondary School to be built on.
In addition to these toxins, there is the matter of air quality. Building on Nutsford Vale Country Park will entail destroying hundreds of trees even though they do so much to improve the air quality of this area. Given this country’s commitment to to the EU to improve air quality, this proposed development simply cannot be sanctioned.
